Zirconia Dental Implants: What They Are, and What They Can Do for You

Filed under: Uncategorized — Candida Castillo @

If you asked most dentists about what they thought the best tooth replacement option was, nearly all of them would say that it’s dental implants. They’re incredibly sturdy, feel realistic, and outlast other methods of tooth replacement by a matter of decades.

However, recent science suggests that the titanium traditionally used in dental implants isn’t the best material for the treatment, and that zirconia may actually be a better pick. Here’s why these zirconia implants are worth considering.

What’s Wrong with Titanium?

Dental implants usually consist of a porcelain crown attached to a titanium rod that’s been implanted in the jaw. Titanium has been the primary material used for these implants for a long time, and there are many reasons that that’s the case. It’s extremely durable, resistant to tarnishing, and integrates well into bone.

However, recent science suggests that titanium can be broken down by bacterial infection, releasing the metal into the surrounding skin. This results in an uncomfortable condition called peri-implantitis, which can cause inflammation and bone loss. Currently, this sort of infection is the number one reason that dental implants can fail.

Why is Zirconia Better?

With all of this research coming out about titanium, zirconia has risen as an alternative to be used in dental implants.

Zirconia is a ceramic, but it’s just as durable and biocompatible as titanium is. Certain studies also suggest that bacteria have a much harder time sticking to zirconia than metal, and these implants have better blood flow through them than traditional titanium. As a result, zirconia implants are thought to be less likely to suffer from peri-implantitis.

Of course, titanium dental implants are still incredible. But if you’re trying to replace your teeth, there’s no reason to settle for less than the best. If you haven’t thought about it before, you should consider zirconia as an option to replace your teeth.
